10 Things Good For The Soul

Have you ever struck up a conversation with a random stranger on the subway, or in a coffee shop or grocery store? And, the conversation went so well, that it left a positive imprint on the rest of your day? Were you singing Get Here by Oleta Adams from the depths of your soul?

Random interactions are one of my things

And, they are a two-way street.

Either Someone will approach me at the drug store or Walmart and ask for advice, or ask for directions on the subway. Alternatively, I’ll strike up a conversation because I’m curious about something. Excuse me, where did you get those candles?

Completely random but more meaningful than just small talk. A sort of pay it forward. This small thing can have such a huge effect on someone’s day. As simple as making a connection and being present in the community.

I feel great after interactions like these. They are good for my soul.

Whatever satisfies the soul is truth ~ Walt Whitman

Mind you, a perfect stranger or anyone else for that matter is not required for soul nurturing. You only need you to be kind to yourself.

So in that vein, here are 10 Things that you can do for yourself that are Good For The Soul. Note: making soup is not one of them. I do like soup, it just didn’t crack this list.

Here are 10 things that are good for the soul. Among them, unplug, make a smoothie, take a nature walk or indulge in your own home spa.

Disconnect

First and foremost, unplug. Make some tea, watch a movie, or do a crossword puzzle. Anything to get away from your phone or computer. This is difficult as a blogger, when you’re writing all the time, editing photos, or scheduling your social media for the day. You could probably use some downtime to debrief. It’s just a matter of eliminating distractions, putting your phone in airplane mode and checking out for a bit.

Make a Smoothie

The possibilities are endless here. You’re only limited to what’s in your fridge or freezer… and a good mixer. My personal favourite is a raspberry banana smoothie made with almond milk and a dash of nutmeg. You can also make a green smoothie with spinach or kale. It’s a good way to get your veggies in for the day. I sometimes throw greens in my fruit smoothies. You honestly can’t taste them, but you win by getting all the nutritional benefits.

Water Your Plants

If you’re like me, then you have certain days of the week that you water your plants. Whether it’s once or twice a week. Give your plants some TLC. Get a spray bottle and mist the leaves and petals.

Call a Friend

By actually picking up the phone and calling. Even better, FaceTime them. They’ll feel great because you took the time to reach out. You’ll feel great because you did too.

Doodle or Draw

Using a pencil, pen, crayon, marker… whatever. Just let your mind wander and go for it. I mean, we’ve all doodled in school when we weren’t paying attention to the teacher. It’s amazing what you can create when you’re not obsessing about it or putting pressure on yourself to draw something gallery-worthy. I have a journal that I doodle in. This hobby stems back to my days in Advertising class where specific assignments were to just doodle until I was doodled out. Genius class, by the way.

Colour and Chill

I’ve just recently discovered Mandala colouring books. They’re amazing and so cheap. found some at my local Dollar Store. The designs are so intricate, you can spend hours or even days just to complete one. Like drawing or doodling, adult colouring books give you an opportunity to chill while at the same time re-energizing your creative juices. It may even inspire a new creative venture. All you need are some crayons or coloured markers/pencils. I use Prismacolor coloured pencils.

Apply Your Favourite Perfume

If you have a signature scent, when you’re wearing it no one can say anything to you. You can walk on water. Have you watched a fragrance commercial lately? Everyone looks like they’re floating on a cloud.

Take a Photography Walk

I love walking. Even during the cold Winter months, I try not to make excuses for not going out for walks. I’ll do it on days that are sunny, but the sun is not too bright. If you struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during non-Daylight Savings time, stocking up on valuable Vitamin D is essential. As far as equipment, you don’t need to lug a heavy camera around. I only walk with my iPhone. As a lover or street photography, casual walks are perfect. You may even get some great photos that you can use on your blog or Instagram.

Massage Your Scalp

Getting my hair washed and massaged at the hair salon is so relaxing, I could literally take a nap. Doing it to yourself has the same effect. But, not only is the massage ultra relaxing, it gets the blood circulation going which benefits both your scalp and hair follicles, promoting hair growth.

Treat Yourself to a Home Spa

Enjoy a tub garnished with oils and bath balms, while reading, listening to music or just lying there in tranquility. Go to town with your skincare routine by steaming your face and performing a detailed facial. Use an exfoliating glove and go to town on your entire body. It’s such an exhilarating sensation. Adorn yourself with your favourite body lotion. End it all by picking your favourite nail polish brand and paint your fingers and toes. My go-to’s are essie and OPI.

In 2017, you vowed to be a better version of yourself. How about we all start being kinder to ourselves, and in turn we can reciprocate that towards others. Pay it forward.
